LMIGs are wonderful ways to increase knowledge and enhance wellbeing among medical students. Since 2009, HMS has been supporting students through the LMIG by providing healthy lunches, opportunities to connect with fellow students and faculty in small group settings, and deliver powerful presentations from faculty at Harvard including Walter Willett, PhD on nutrition, Joji Suzuki, MD on Motivational Interviewing, Dan Lieberman, PhD on exercise, Beth Frates, MD on behavior change, Rich Joseph, MD on Sleep and many others.
The HMS LMIG has been involved with other activities including a 5K Plant Based Fun Run to raise money for the Revere Food Pantry. They have performed research and published it. And, they have enjoyed virtual cooking classes. Each year brings new leadership and new opportunities to help share lifestyle medicine practices and principles.
According to the AAMC Lifestyle Medicine is one of the newest medical specialties. Trainees help spread the word about Lifestyle Medicine by starting Lifestyle Medicine Interest Groups (LMIG) and hosting community events. The establishment of an LMIG cultivates multi-institutional, student-initiated programming that supports healthy habits for students, faculty, as well as the local community. ACLM’s Trainees have started student-led, faculty-supported groups across the country and have been instrumental in advocating for curriculum reform. LMIGs are the perfect way to connect, share ideas, collaborate on projects and learn how to practice Lifestyle Medicine.
